The 70-members of the Norwalk Community Chorale will don their black robes, pick up their songbooks and invite the public to a free spring concert in celebration of the group's 50-year anniversary.

At the "Golden Celebration" concerts June 3 and 4, the group will perform a wide variety of pieces that span its history. "We've chosen the best of the best for this concert," said Conductor Brian Muller.

Marilyn Jones will accompany the chorale on piano. The performance will include the classical "Hallelujah Amen," Cole Porter's "Night and Day," "The Music of the Night," from Phantom of the Opera, and a medley from "Les Miserables."

The concert will also feature Eileen and Lauren Muller playing cello.

Staples on the Norwalk Christmas and Spring concert scene, the Chorale is made up entirely of local people who share a love of music and the desire to perform. Organized in 1961 under the auspices of the City of Norwalk Parks and Recreation Department, the group performs at no cost to the public.

The members of the chorale reflect diversity in age and singing talents. There are no auditions for singers; everyone who wants to sing is accepted into the chorale. The only requirement for membership is the desire to sing in a four-part mixed chorus.

"Practice, practice and more practice," is how Muller describes the process of creating a cohesive performance with singers of varying abilities.

"This is the challenge inherent in a community group, but It all comes together beautifully," he said. "We have been rehearsing for this concert since January."

Muller has been conducting the group since 1998. He studied Chorale Conducting at Western Connecticut State University under the directorship of Kevin Issacs. Muller teaches middle school choruses at Greens Farms Academy. He is a member of the Connecticut Music Educator's Association, the American Choral Director's Association and the American Guild of Organists.
